PONDICHERRY: The fifth economic census to provide a reliable database on the contribution of the unorganized sector towards the Gross Domestic Product has been launched in the Union Territory on Thursday. Lieutenant Governor M. M Lakhera launched the census programme at a function held at Raj Nivas. The survey conducted by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Pondicherry will enumerate the number of entrepreneurial units, big and small, engaged in production of goods and services not for their own consumption. Those units engaged in crop production and plantation have been exempted from the economic survey. Graduates and postgraduates registered with the employment exchange have been selected and trained as enumerators. These enumerators will make house-to-house visits and collect information about enterprises both within and outside. Details such as the number of workers, economic activity, premises status, fuel used and registration details will be enlisted. These enterprises will find a place in the directory of industries the Government of India plans to bring out. The Central Statistical Organisation functioning under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme implementation is the agency conducting the survey at the national level. So far, 4 censuses have been completed and the last one was conducted in 1998. The Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister N Rangasamy have urged the public to cooperate with the enumeration process.
