Pondicherry
Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY: N. Kalainathan, Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Pondicherry unit) and nominated legislator, on Thursday called for a thorough revamp of the Central prison. He said all staff in the prison should be transferred as their long period of service was posing problems. Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Kalainathan said the recent death of three undertrial prisoners in the Central prison was a matter of serious concern. Although the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, had stated that an enquiry by a former judge would be held, he said that a retired judge from outside the Union Territory should conduct the probe. The probe report should also be available in a month's time. He said that retaining staff for a longer period in their posts also called for a close review and all the jail staff should be transferred as part of prison revamp.
CPI demonstration
Meanwhile, a group of CPI (Pondicherry unit) activists held a demonstration in front of the Central prison here. Mr. Kalainathan led the protest. The protesters wanted steps to prevent lapses in prison administration and adequate security measures.
