Indian Senior `A' asserts its supremacy

Sports Reporter

BANGALORE: Karnataka Hoody Club women's team flattered to deceive. Not that the team was expected to put it across Indian Senior `A' campers. But it was an early jolt that the local side gave when it clinched the first set at 25-22.

Thereafter the senior `A' team led by Hemalatha and Anitha Mathew proved streets ahead and won 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-14 in 88 minutes in a women's league match of the inaugural Rajiv Gandhi Memorial All India Invitation volleyball tournament at the Hoody SC court here on Thursday.

Senior `A' tops group

This is Senior `A's second straight win and it tops group A and Karnataka Hoody Club as the second team also qualified for the semifinals.

Earlier, Senior `B' showed no mercy and annihilated Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) 25-11, 25-21, 25-17 in just 50 minutes.

Karnataka with the addition of Central Railway's Hemalatha Ursul and Yogita did look pepped up in the first set. With some steady play at the net and solid backcourt play by `libero' Mamatha Rao the local side cruised along nicely to win at 25-22. But that proved the end of the local side's domination as well.

Anita Mathew packed power in her shots and with Hemalatha, P.V. Sheeba and Julillatha giving nothing away, the Senior `A' side went along merrily to win the next three. A series of wrong calls by the officials also did Karnataka in.

Late lastnight ONGC was on a gallop and outhit Southern Railway (Chennai) in straight sets at 25-23, 25-18, 25-12.

The qualifiers to the last eight:

Men: Group A: IOB (Chennai) and Income Tax (Hyd). Group B: ONGC (Uttaranchal) and Southern Railway (Chennai). Group C: Indian Navy (Kochi) and, ICF (Chennai). Group D: Kochi Refineries (Kochi) and Karnataka Hood Club.

The results: Men: ONGC bt Southern Railway (Chennai) 25-23, 25-18, 25-12.

Women: Group A: Indian Srs `A' bt Karnataka Hoody Club 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-14. Group B: Indian Srs `B' bt KSEB 25-11, 25-21, 25-17.
