CPI(M) concern over untouchability

CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) State executive committee has expressed serious concern over the alleged prevalence of untouchability in some parts of the State.

In a resolution, it said it was unfortunate that in Keeripatti panchayat local caste Hindus ostracised 15 Dalit families for exercising their franchise in favour of the Dalit Panthers India candidate in the recent panchayat poll.

Similarly, in Manakudi panchayat in Kanniyakumari district, a Christian priest allegedly instructed villagers not to have any link with a local family and his relatives just because he contested in an election against his wishes.

The committee wanted the Government to take action against caste Hindus in Keeripatti and against the Manakudi panchayat priest for practising untouchability. — Special Correspondent

Vocational course for visually impaired

CHENNAI: The National Association for the Blind, Chennai unit, is conducting free vocational rehabilitation programme, computer training and telephone operator course for visually impaired people. During the training period, the candidates will be given free food and accommodation. Interested candidates may contact the office at Plot no. 12, Association Road, First Lane, Madhavaram, Chennai - 60 or on phone (25376856 and 25586598) between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday, says an association release. — Special Correspondent

Arrack seized, 4 held

CHENNAI: The North Chennai Prohibition Enforcement Police arrested four persons on Wednesday and seized 150 litres of arrack.

A police press release said a vehicular check was conducted near Madhavaram round tana. A check of the vehicle from Koyambedu led to the seizure of the arrack. The police arrested Masthan, the van driver; Sankar of Tambaram and Murali and Saravanan of Madhavaram Colony.

They were produced before a magistrate at Tiruvottiyur court, who remanded them to 15 days custody. — Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Depositors and investors in Anubhav Group of Companies can send in their claims in form No. 66 (under the Companies Act) duly attested by an advocate enclosing all original documents such as sale deeds, maintenance agreements, teak certificates, cash certificates or cheques, under registered post with acknowledgement due to the Administrator, Anubhav Group at G-131 (Basement), Anna Nagar East, Chennai 600 102, up to June 30. — Staff Reporter

Award for RPF constable

CHENNAI: The Railway Board awarded a cash prize of Rs. 4,000 on Thursday to a Railway Protection Force constable, B. Dhesi, attached to the Central Railway Station.

A letter from the Board Chairman said the cash prize was being given for exhibiting exemplary bravery in the rescue work at Devanampattinam in Cuddalore on the day tsunami hit the east coast.

Mr. Dhesi went on leave to Cuddalore during Christmas. He was at the beach, when the tragedy struck. He was able to save a couple of people and took them to safety. Recognising his contribution, the Cuddalore Collector, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, sent a letter of appreciation to the then Chief Security Commissioner, RPF.

The nonagenarian astrologer, S.A.P. Varadhan, on hearing about the act of Mr. Dhesi, rewarded him with a cash prize of Rs. 11,000 in February. — Staff Reporter

Appreciation certificate for Collector

Thanjavur: The Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, today received an appreciation certificate from the Governor, Surjeet Singh Barnala, for achieving the Flag Day collection target.

R. D. Jayaraj, Assistant Director, ex-servicemen welfare, presented the certificate to the Collector here today. V. Rajaraman, District Revenue Officer, was present.

Mr. Moni achieved a target of Rs.13,65, 000 fixed as Flag Day collection in 2003 when he was the Nagapattinam Collector. — Staff Reporter

SBI to give 1,000 tractor loans

Thanjavur: The State Bank of India, main branch here, has decided to give 1,000 tractor loans in May 2005, says Jagadeesan, Assistant General Manager.

The bank has entered into tie-up arrangements with many tractor companies to achieve its target.

Mahindra and Mahindra, one of the companies with which the bank had entered into an agreement, has provided a publicity van for this purpose.

Mr. Jagadeesan flagged off the van from Thanjavur recently.

Interaction between dealers and branch managers has been arranged for quicker sanction of loans, he added. — Staff Reporter

Two inmates of Juvenile Home escape

TIRUCHI: Two inmates escaped from the Government Juvenile Home here recently.

Nadimuthu (17) of Annavalaivu near Thuvakudi here and Manikandan (18) of Maruthanthalai in Pudukottai district were lodged in the Home a few months ago after they were involved in theft cases. While a theft case has been registered against Nadimuthu in Thuvakudi police station here, a similar case has been registered against Manikandan in Ganesh Nagar police station in Pudukottai.

The sources said Nadimuthu was lodged in the Home in December, while Manikandan was lodged in March. The Fort Police are investigating the case. — Staff Reporter

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 52.79 feet today. The inflow was 842 cusecs and the discharge 876 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Held with sulphur

Tuticorin : A 57-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday on a charge of possessing sulphur for manufacturing explosives. The police said Arumugam was arrested at Authoor, based on a tip-off, and 100 grams of sulphur was recovered from him. — Staff Reporter

Youth held in theft case

Tuticorin : A 23-year-old youth was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly stealing iron plates from a shop at Ottapidaram recently.

The police said Feroz Khan had stolen 23 kg of iron plates from a shop belonging to one Sekhar. The accused was remanded. — Staff Reporter.

Three constables suspended

ERODE: The Railway police on Wednesday suspended three police constables, Palanisamy, Saravanan and Prabhu, attached to the Erode Railway Police for their involvement in a ganja smuggling case. The police said that the trio took five bags of ganja from the Jammudavi-Madurai Express Train on April 21 and sold them to a ganja merchant. The Railway police arrested Palanisamy and the ganja merchant, Chinnammal. Prabhu and Saravanan are still at large.

120-year-old tree uprooted

ERODE: A 120-year-old banyan tree in Sengodampalayam near Erode was uprooted in heavy gale and rain last night. The tree fell over a hut injuring a labour.

Rain

ERODE: Erode and its surrounding areas received heavy rain on Wednesday night followed by lightning and thunder.

Erode recorded 34 mm of rainfall, Bhavani 33 mm, Perundurai 25 mm, Gobichettipalayam 19 mm and Sathyamangalam 12 mm. Kangeyam, Kodumudi, Chennimalai and Chitode also received rain.

Animal census begins

ERODE: The Forest Department began the Animal Census in Erode and Sathyamangalam forest divisions on Thursday.

The Department conducts such census once in three years. This time, it has deployed more than 450 forest employees such as Forest Rangers, Foresters, Watchers and others to conduct it in a full-fledged manner.

In addition, about 300 civilians have been deployed to assist the officials.

The work will be completed on May 7 after which a detailed statistical report will be sent to the Government.

Arrested

Hosur: As many as 32 persons including eight women who were brewing illicit arrack were arrested during a raid by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing personnel at Denkanikottai, 40 kms from here on Wednesday.

Police said that in the raid, 2,815 litres of illicit arrack worth Rs. 2 lakhs was destroyed.
