KANCHEEPURAM: The Pattali Makkal Katchi founder-leader, S. Ramadoss, said that the byelections to Kancheepuram and Gummidipoondi were an acid test for the ruling party. On Thursday, he kicked of his two-day whirlwind campaign here in support of the Democratic Progressive Alliance nominee, P.M. Kumar, Addressing a meeting at Tollgate, the starting point of his campaign, Dr. Ramadoss said though the results were not going to have any impact on the present Assembly, it would definitely reflect the performance of the sitting Government. "They have not done any good to the State. The only achievement they can boast of is the number of former Ministers they had during the last four years," he said. He said: "People are ready to ring death knell for the AIADMK Government. Even the officials at the Secretariat have realised that this Government could not come back to power. ... The DMK will come back to power next year."
Making wayside halts, Dr. Ramadoss touched upon various problems such as unemployment and the increase in the number of people living below poverty line. Saying that the PMK had "committed a sin" by helping the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam come back to power in 2001, he said the party did not hesitate to distance itself from the AIADMK after realising its mistake.
