Nagapattinam

NAGAPATTINAM: : The State Government has sanctioned Rs.10.50 lakhs towards 35 per cent subsidy for building 40 `pettis,' said J. Radhakrishnan, Collector, here on Thursday. Talking to The Hindu , he said that he had written to the Government last month that operation of mechanised vessels depended on availability of `pettis' as Nagapattinam district did not have a boat yard. A `petti' (in Tamil) is a wooden box frame structure with a trolley built by individual operators and used in repair and maintenance of mechanised boats and trawlers. Damaged mechanised boats and trawlers recovered but still floating in water in the port could be brought ashore for repair only if these `pettis' were available. Similarly, damaged mechanised fishing boats and trawlers that were recovered and placed on the shore through cranes after carrying out repair works could be put in the sea only through `pettis.' If repaired mechanised boats were put in the sea through cranes, the repair if any during lifting and dropping process might reduce sea worthiness of the vessels. More than 40 `pettis' each costing between Rs.70,000 to Rs.75,000 were used in Nagapattinam by some operators but all `pettis,' were fully damaged by the December 26 tsunami and had to be built afresh. He said that he had sent a proposal to the Government that operators might be given relief in order to restore normalcy quickly and urged the Government to extend 35 per cent subsidy and 65 per cent loan for each `petti' or each of the 40-odd `pettis' by linking them to banks. Mr. Radhakrishnan said that his proposal was placed before the State-level Committee on Calamity Relief Fund at its meeting held last month and the committee had decided to sanction Rs.10.50 lakhs towards 35 per cent subsidy for 40 `pettis' at the unit cost of Rs.75,000 each and the Government accepted the panel's decision and granted subsidy.
