Three killed, three injured in accident

SHIGGAON (HAVERI DT.): Three persons were killed when the van in which they were travelling collided with a truck here. Three people were injured in the accident.

The victims have been identified Anil Jadhav, a BJP leader from Chikmagalur; his mother, Parvathi; and his uncle Tanaji. They were on their way to Shedigewadi in Maharashtra, where Anil was to get married on May 16, according to the police.

Suhila, Savita and Gopal, who were also in the Maruti Omni van, have been admitted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences in Hubli. They are said to be out of danger.

The accident occurred around 6 a.m. on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway. — Staff Correspondent

PAC Director

BANGALORE: The former Chief Secretary, A. Ravindra, has been appointed Director of the Public Affairs Centre (PAC) in place of Suresh Balakrishna.

Dr. Ravindra holds a Ph.D. in Urban Development and has published several papers on the subject. He retired as the Chief Secretary in 2002.

NDDB and KMF

sign MoU

BANGALORE: The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Karnataka Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation (KMF) have signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a 30-million tonne capacity milk powder plant near Channarayapatna in Hassan district at a cost of Rs. 70 crores.

The NDDB will release up to Rs. 250 crores for various initiatives in accordance with its policies to prepare and implement a five-year plan and augment the State's dairy development infrastructure. — Special Correspondent

Mango exhibition

from May 25

BANGALORE: A weeklong exhibition and sale of mangoes will be held at the Glass House in Lalbagh here from May 25.

The Department of Horticulture has organised the exhibition of various varieties of mangoes for the benefit of growers. Growers from different parts of the State and outside will participate in the show. Stalls for the sale of mangoes will be provided to growers free of cost. Those interested in participating in the exhibition may contact the department for details. — Special Correspondent.

Seminar on census

of castes

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Backward Castes United Forum will be organising a seminar here on Sunday to create awareness among the backward classes about the caste-wise census to be undertaken by the State's permanent Backward Classes Commission.

The forum has demanded the adoption of a simple questionnaire for the census. The forum and other organisations of backward classes have complained about the complicated format of the questionnaire.

The other objective of holding the seminar is to press for the proper conduct of the census, the President of the forum, G. Srinivasan told presspersons today. — Staff Reporter

Congress sets up campaign committees

BANGALORE: The KPCC President, B. Janardhana Poojary, has set up campaign committees in each district for the coming elections to taluk and zilla panchayats.

The district in-charge Ministers in the previous Government have been appointed chairmen of the publicity committees while the Congress Ministers in the present Government will be co-chairmen. The District Congress Committee Presidents have been appointed conveners and the district in-charge office-bearers of the KPCC organisers. MPs, former MPs, MLAs, MLCs, former MLAs and MLCs and presidents of taluk and zilla panchayats are members of the committee, according to Prakash Rathod, MLC and KPCC General Secretary. — Special Correspondent

KSOU examinations

MYSORE: The Karnataka State Open University has announced the schedule for its semester and non-semester B.A., B.Com., M.A., and M.Com. examinations. According to a press statement, the examinations for first year B.A., B.Com., M.A., and M.Com. will begin on May 18 while the examinations for final year M.A. and M.Com. will begin from June 2. Students have been asked to obtain admission tickets from their Examination Centres two days prior to the start of the examinations. Two injured

MYSORE: Two persons were injured when a lorry collided with their motorcycle on Mysore-Hunsur Road on Wednesday. The injured, Naveen Kumar and Sunil, employees of HDFC Bank in Kuvempunagar, were going to Hootagalli on the outskirts of the city, when the lorry collided with their motorcycle near Hotel Roost. The two were seriously injured and have been B.M. Hospital. The Traffic Police have booked a case and seized the lorry. — Staff Correspondent

Science camp

MYSORE: A seven-day science camp will be organised at Regional Institute of Education (RIE), Mysore, from May 9 for 35 students of classes VI and VII standards from a few selected schools in the city.

According to a press statement from RIE's Reader in Education, N.N. Prahallada, the camp will help students develop scientific temper and see the relevance of science in day-to-day life. — Staff Correspondent

Rape accused at large

Belgaum: The Kakti police registered a case against Ramachandra Laxman Kanbarkar for allegedly raping a five-year-old girl in Kakti police station limits on Thursday.

According to the police, Kanbarkar took the girl to his house under the pretext of giving chocolates and allegedly raped her. Kanbarkar is at large. — Staff Correspondent

Counter

HUBLI: A separate counter has been set up at the tahsildar's office here to issue caste and income certificates, according to a press release issued by V.R. Yaradakeri, Tahsildar.

This arrangement has been made in the wake of the rush for these certificates on account of reopening of schools and colleges in June. If students from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have obtained caste certificate, they need not apply again this year. Certificates issued to students from other castes will be valid for five years, Mr. Yaradakeri said. — Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: B. Damodar Shenoy, Deputy General Manager, Canara Bank, Mangalore Zone, inaugurated an ATM counter at the Bailappanavar Nagar branch of the bank on Tuesday.
