MADURAI: : Eight non-teaching staff members of Madurai Kamaraj University will face stringent action for "grave mistakes" they committed. The action would range from termination of service to demotion. "The decision will be based on the nature of the case." This decision was taken at a meeting of the Syndicate on Wednesday following the recommendation of the Establishment Committee that looked into the cases. The staff members are working in different administrative wings. University officials told The Hindu that this was "a major and bold decision" since the cases were pending for long. "This will also serve as a lesson for others," a Syndicate member said. The Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, said the Syndicate members felt that punishment must be given according to the nature of the offence. Action, to be initiated soon, would include compulsory retirement or withdrawal of increments. Another point that came up for discussion was how to prevent the staff from rushing to court when decisions taken by the administration were "unfavourable" to them. The Vice-Chancellor said the university had to spend a lot on legal matters, as staff members went to court over various issues. To check this trend, the meeting felt that the university should collect from the employee the court expenses. "When an employee is going to court against the university, the legal expenses must be charged to him," a Syndicate member said.
