PATHANAMTHITTA: The election authorities have proposed 123 new wards in the 54 panchayats in the hill district of Pathanamthitta as part of the delimitation process. The assessment was made as per the guidelines of the Election Commission. The district at present has 634 panchayat wards and the proposal is to increase it to 757. The Election Commission has fixed the minimum and maximum number of wards in a panchayat to 12 and 22. The grama panchayats of Pandalam and Pallickal will be the two local bodies having the maximum number of wards after the delimitation processs — 22 wards. Ezhamkulam and Pramadom panchayats stand next with 19 and 18 wards respectively, according to official sources. However, 18 of the 54 panchayts in the district will have only the minimum number of wards (12) after the delimitation process.
Municipalities
Meanwhile, the number of wards in the three municipalities in the district, Adoor, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvalla, will also go up by three wards each, raising its strength 90. The proposal is to increase the number of wards from 22 to 25 in the Adoor municipality, in Thiruvalla municipality. The total number of wards in the Pathanamthitta municipality will go up to 29 while the Thiruvalla municipality will have a total of 36 wards following the delimitation. The public complaints and suggestions on the delimitation proposals should reach the Election department on or before May 16 so that the enquiry reports could be prepared by May 30, the department sources said. The final list will be published on June 30, according to official sources.
