Beenamol to tie the knot

NEW DELHI: Double Asian Games gold medallist K.M. Beenamol, the toast of the nation after the Busan Games, will begin life on a new track when she enters the wedlock in Kerala on Sunday.

The star athlete from Idukki district, the saving grace for Indian athletics when she entered the 400m semifinals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, is getting married to Dr. Vivek George, a medical officer with Baba Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai.

Asked whether she will make a return to competition after her marriage, Beenamol evaded a direct reply.

``It has to be a joint decision though he is happy to see me return to the track,'' Beenamol said.

Beenamol, who was the first to erase P.T. Usha's long-standing 400m record of 51.21 seconds, was awarded the highest sporting honour — the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna — in 2002. She was earlier decorated with the Arjuna Award in 2000.

Her younger brother K.M. Binu is also a national champion in 400m. — PTI
