Truckers' stir: stalemate continues

Staff Reporter

Agents accused of scuttling system

KOTTAYAM: The stalemate over the introduction of `turn system' for truck owners at Kottayam market continued for the fifth day with the movement of goods from and to the town getting affected seriously.

Lorry owners and workers are accusing the big lorry brokers of scuttling the introduction of new system, which according to them would be more equitable and remunerative.

According to lorry owners, presently a few big brokers were controlling the market and pushing down the charges artificially.

The transportation industry is already under pressure from rising diesel charges, hike in price of spareparts, and also from officials, they argue.

The big brokers get not only normal commission from the parties, but also through unofficial charges called `crossing'. To meet such amounts, the rate of rent due to the lorry owners are being pushed down, they said. According to them, a load which goes up to Pune from Kottayam and coming back (covering a distance of 2,700 km) would incur a loss of more than Rs.700 to the truck owner at the present rate.

It was against this backdrop that the organisation of booking agents and Kottayam District Truck Operators' Association arrived at mutually agreed rates for vehicle rents.

However, this agreement was being breached by a handful of big booking agents, they alleged.

According to them, the `Turn system' was found effective in controlling the exploitation and also in ensuring a more equitable regime in the goods

transportation industry. Under the system, the lorries would get their chance for taking the load in a prioritised manner.

The big agents were trying to scuttle the introduction of the system in Kottayam, they said.
