Thailand keen to import Assam tea

Wants inclusion of more items under FTA

GUWAHATI: Thailand is keen to import Assam tea and negotiate with India for inclusion of more items under the Free Trade Agreement between the two nations.

The Deputy Director, Department of Export Promotion, Thai Ministry of Commerce, Kunyaphan Raengkhum, told reporters here on Thursday that both Assam and Darjeeling tea were well-known in his country and had lot of potential for exporting it to Thailand.

Mr. Raengkhum was here leading a Thai trade delegation of 12 exporters to take part in the first Thai Export Fair here.

The Department of Export Promotion, Ministry of Commerce, Thailand, and the Industries and Trade Fair Association of Assam (ITFAA), the organiser of international Guwahati Trade Fair, jointly organised the Thai fair.

The Thai official also said that his Ministry would move the Thailand Government on a request made by ITFAA for opening a Thai trade information office at Guwahati. He said while so far only 82 items had been included in the list of FTA with India, Thailand had more than 5,000 items to offer, Mr. Raengkhum said.

The product ranges on which the Thai delegation received trade enquiries from Indian businessmen in the fair included fresh fruit, engine oil, household products, make-up puff, hair care products, stationary products and garments.
