DIG asks extremists to make use of rehabilitation opportunities

VIZIANAGARAM: Ninety-two cadres of the CPI (Maoist) consisting of couriers and sympathisers, including 12 minor girls, surrendered before the DIG (Visakha range), N. Madan Mohan, at a meeting at Parvathipuram on Thursday.

Mr. Mohan said that Maoists had been exploiting innocent tribals and luring them to anti-social activities. This would only bring misery to their parents, he added. The DIG asked them to utilise the opportunities being provided for their benefit by the Government. He said that 3,000 home guards would soon be recruited and special policing teams appointed to maintain law and order in the agency villages.

Reacting to a complaint by Bidika Venkateswarlu, one of the surrendered sympathisers, the DIG said that combing in the agency would be stopped immediately and asked them to inform the Superintendent of Police, Swati Lakra, if there were any violation of his promise to them to enable him to take disciplinary action against the concerned. He said his department would extend all possible help for their uplift. He appealed to the elderly people to counsel the misguided youth to shun unlawful activities and join the mainstream.

Harassment charge

Earlier, Biddika Venkateswarlu, a surrendered Maoist, said that besides innumerable civic problem in their villages they had been facing harassment from the police. Because of police harassment, he said about 20 youth from Valasaguda had migrated to other areas. He said that they, out of fear, were providing food and shelter to the CPI (Maoist) cadres.

Two women activists

Our Guntur Staff Reporter writes: In a significant development, 15 Maoists, including five members of the Chandravanka dalam, surrendered before the Guntur SP, Jitender. They included two women activists.

The SP said on Thursday that the surrendered naxalites were disenchanted with the Maoist philosophy. According to a press release issued here, Mr. Jitender said the growing highhanded behaviour of certain leaders in the Maoist party was driving many cadres to think of joining the mainstream.

"Many cadres are fed up with the party. There will be many more surrenders soon," the SP said.

The five members of Chandravanka dalam, who surrendered, included Yandla Yadamma alias Lalitha, Ramavath Sonali alias Sarala, Pothaiah alias Nagaraju, Yandali Muthaiah and Chaviti Bayanna.

The 10 other surrendered Maoists were Pesala Ramarao, Sagirala Mallaiah, Kesanupalli Ramulu, Jonnalagadda Venkateswarlu, Siddi Venkateswarlu, Sk. Saida, Mogili Rosaiah, Maram Venkata Reddy, Mavidi Devadanam and Dodda Amaraiah.
