No compromise on CMP, says CPI

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI State secretary, Veliyam Bhargavan, has said that the party would not compromise on the implementation of the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) by the Union Government. The party has extended support to the Congress only because the programme aims at the welfare of the people. Inaugurating the memorial constructed in Sasthavattom in honour of the party leader Kattayikkonam Sadanandan, marking his first death anniversary, on Thursday, the CPI leader said the State Governance had come to a standstill and the party would launch State-wide agitation against this. The Oommen Chandy Government had lost everybody's support and should resign, he added.

Call to maintain equanimity

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State general secretary of the Kerala Muslim Jama-ath Council, A. Pookunhu, has asked the Muslim community not to be provoked by the statements of the SNDP Yogam leader, Vellapally Natesan, and the NSS leader, P.K. Narayana Panicker, against the minorities. Mr. Pookunhu was inaugurating a district committee meeting of the organisation here today. He said that they were part of a devious move to implement the Sangh Parivar's agenda to foment communal trouble. He criticised the Government for allowing the leaders to say whatever they liked. He said that there were only three Muslims among the 64 taluk tahsildars. — Special Correspondent

No recovery

from salary

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Electricity Board has decided not to make any recovery from the salary for May of employees drawing a basic pay of up to Rs.7,800 under the new scale and up to Rs. 2,675 under the old scale. The amount involved will be recovered in five instalments from the salary for the July-November period. — Special Correspondent

Junior doctors seek

judicial probe

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Junior Doctors' Forum has demanded that a judicial inquiry be conducted into the allegation that the sudden spurt in the number of successful candidates from Malappuram district in the engineering/medical entrance examinations was due to malpractices in the conduct of the exam. At a press conference here on Thursday, the forum president, A. R. Sajeenragh and the secretary, George Lee, said that the Government should explore more sophisticated options for conducting the examination so that there were no question paper leaks or malpractices in evaluation of answer sheets.— Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: As part of World Asthma Day observation, the Indian Homeopathic Medical Association is conducting an awareness programme on the disease and its cure. Those interested may attend the programme at the clinics recognised by the association, according to its general secretary, V.R. Girish Kumar. — Staff Reporter

Painting exhibition

KOLLAM: The noted sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman has called upon the State Government to include painting in the curriculum. He was inaugurating an exhibition of paintings by K.V. Jyothilal at the Collectorate Library Hall here on Wednesday. The four-day exhibition is being organised by SARAS, an arts and cultural organisation of the Kollam Civil Station employees. The District Collector, B. Sreenivas, honoured Mr. Kunhiraman with a golden shawl on behalf of the civil station employees. — Staff Reporter

Nominated

KOLLAM: Auriel Fonseca and N.B. Satish Kumar have been nominated vice-chairman and general secretary, respectively, of the Kerala Pradesh Gandhi Yuva Mandalam. The nominations were announced by the chairman of the mandalam, Ayathil Sudarsanan. — Staff Reporter

Killed in accident

KOLLAM: Two women were killed on the spot when they were run over by a mini lorry on the National Highway at Ochira early on Thursday morning. The women were standing by the road side near the Ochira Temple and praying when they were run over by the lorry. They have been identified as Jaya (45) and Vatsala Kumari (40). They were on their way to attend the house warming of a close relative. The Ochira police have registered a case.

Red Cross medical awards announced

ALAPPUZHA: The Alappuzha Medical College Hospital deputy superintendent, B. Padmakumar, and the assistant professor in the cardiology department, V. Jayaram, have been selected for the Red Cross medical award-2005, an official release of the Indian Red Cross Society has said. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs.10,000 each and a memento. The SNDP Yogam general secretary, Vellappally Natesan, will present the awards at a function here on May 8. Dr. Padmakumar, assistant professor in the general medicine department, was selected for the award for his service in the tsunami relief camps and Dr. Jayaram for his contributions in organising public awareness programmes to control cardiac diseases, said the release.
