Staff Reporter

The police launch massive search for culprits

MALAPPURAM: Burglars broke into a cooperative bank at Thirunavaya in Malappuram district on Wednesday night and carried off gold jewellery and cash for Rs.1.22 crores. The eight-member gang looted the Thirunavaya Service Cooperative Bank between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. after tying down the watchman.

According to Puthanveettil Koyassan, 50, the bank's watchman who was found abandoned in a nearby paddy field with his hands tied to the back and a few bruises on his body, an eight-member gang overpowered him before breaking open the bank.

Some of the gang members, who came in a vehicle, spoke Tamil, Mr. Koyassan told the police. It is suspected that the gang had inter-State links.

The police launched a massive search soon after having informed of the robbery at 5.45 a.m. Vehicles were searched and lodgings raided across Malappuram and neighbouring districts.

The photographs and data of Tamil men with criminal background were exhibited at various points.

The special investigation team, headed by P. Raju, Dy.SP, Malappuram, has extended the search to Coimbatore.

The circle inspectors of Tirur, Chavakkad and Palakkad are also involved in the probe.

Inspector General of Police Krishna Murthy, DIG (Thrissur Range) Ravada A. Chandrasekhar and District SP James K.G. visited the bank.

According to the police, the gang laid their hands on the iron safe of the bank by breaking open the main door and then the strong room. They used iron rods to break open the safe, the police said.

The gang carried off 21 kg gold (worth Rs. 12,180,000) and currency worth Rs.69,000, said the police.

Although the gang took coins to the tune of Rs.16,000, they were found strewn in the nearby areas.

A man living opposite the bank had come out of his house on hearing the sound in the night, but was forced to go indoors as the gang members hurled stones at him. He reportedly did not alert the police or neighbours as he had no telephone.
