Scheme for quality power

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Minister for Electricity, Aryadan Mohammed, said here on Thursday that the State Electricity Board might be able to ensure quality of power supply in the cities with the implementation of the schemes under the Accelerated Power Development and Reform Programme (APDRP).

The Minister told a press conference that the cities would get uninterrupted power supply on completion of the schemes. (Quality power implies, besides uninterrupted supply, stable voltage and frequency.)

Central allocation

Mr. Mohammed said that the Centre had altogether sanctioned Rs. 1,350 crores for various power projects, of which Rs. 905 crores was under the APDRP. Of this, 25 per cent was grant. Schemes costing Rs. 168.76 crores were being implemented in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Alappuzha, Kozhikode, Thalassery and Kannur. Besides, schemes costing Rs. 430.75 crores would be carried out in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode cities and certain towns.

Electricity would be supplied to 3,337 rural areas with population of about 3,000 each under the Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojana. The Centre had sanctioned Rs. 343 crores under the programme. Besides, Rs. 95 crores had been sanctioned under the Rural Electrification District Backbone.

He said that the State's quota from the Central pool had been increased by 160 MW. A further increase by 70 MW was expected. The cost would be only Rs. 1.60 a unit, which would help offset the heavy cost of power (Rs. 4 a unit) from the Kayamkulam Power Plant. The Kuttiyadi Augmentation Scheme and the Malakkara Scheme would be commissioned in June.

Waitlist

He said that the applications for power connections pending now could be cleared in one year's time. All applicants could be given connections by 2007.

Referring to allegations about large-scale purchase of concrete poles for electrification, the Minister said that there was still shortage of poles. Five-year contracts were awarded to encourage setting up of additional poll casting units.
