THRISSUR: The Bharatiya Janata Party State president, P. S. Sreedharan Pillai, has said the reported move of the senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran to forge an alliance between the National Congress (Indira) and the Left is suicidal. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Sreedharan Pillai urged Mr. Karunakaran and K. Muraleedharan, president of the National Congress (Indira), to reveal details of a statement in the party's political resolution that claimed that "communal and mafia groups had controlled the United Democratic Front Government.'' Mr. Pillai said the BJP would be the third major force in the next elections in the State. "The BJP does not believe in forming a front, but anyone who approves of the policies of the National Democratic Alliance can be a part of the third force. The BJP had improved its percentage of votes from nine to 13 in 10 constituencies in the previous elections. On the other hand, there was a drop in the Left Democratic Front's percentage of votes,'' the BJP State president contended. Mr. Pillai claimed that hundreds of people, including Adivasi families, were planning to join the BJP. They would be given membership by the BJP national vice-president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, in Palakkad and Thrissur on Friday. "Among those who receive membership are 200 residents of 20 colonies in Kodakara, Chalakudy and Ollur, 100 people from Nelliampathy, 70 families from Chittur, and 400 people, including former CPI(M) activists, from Kodungallur, Methala and Edavilangu.
