NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court will this Friday take up for hearing a bail application by R.K. Sharma, prime accused in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case and suspended Inspector-General of Prisons, Haryana. Justice B.D. Ahmed had last month issued notices to the Delhi Government and the Delhi police for May 6. Mr. Justice Ahmed issued the notices and adjourned the hearing for May 6 when the Special Public Prosecutor for the case, S.K. Saxena, sought time to go through the petition and consult the investigating officer of the case.
Interim bail
This time round he has engaged a new lawyer to argue his case. Rana Praveen Siddiqui, a Delhi High Court lawyer, will hold the brief for him. The High Court had in May last year dismissed his interim bail application. He had sought interim bail on the ground of a back ailment. Sharma and his five co-accused are facing trial for criminal conspiracy read with murder for allegedly killing the then Indian Express Principal Correspondent Shivani Bahtnagar in Navkunj Apartments at Patparganj in East Delhi in 1999. Dismissing the bail application then, Justice O.P. Dwivedi had agreed to the submission by Mr. Saxena that the conduct of Sharma had been unedifying before he had surrendered before the Delhi police in the case. Earlier, the Additional Sessions Judge, Sunil Gaur, conducting trial of the case, had also rejected his interim bail application
