MADIKERI: The number of constituencies in Kodagu Zilla Panchayat has been increased from 26 to 29, according to a notification issued by the State Election Commission recently. Accordingly, each of the three taluks gets one constituency more in addition to the existing ones. Chennayyanakote in Virajpet taluk, Kadagadal in Madikeri taluk and Hanagallu in Somwarpet taluk are the three new constituencies. Betoli in Virajpet taluk has been renamed as Bittangala constituency. There are 11 constituencies each in Virajpet and Somwarpet taluks, and seven in Madikeri taluk. The constituencies were created based on the census of 2001. The criterion followed was each constituency should have a minimum population of 18,000. The smaller population criterion was adopted only for Kodagu and Chikmaglur districts. The voter-population in constituencies of other zilla panchayats is 40,000, sources said. The constituencies in Virajpet taluk are Kadnur, Bittangala, Kakotparambu, Ammathi, Siddapura, Thithimathi, Balele, Gonicoppa, Ponnampet, Srimangala and Chennayanakote, Madikeri taluk: Makkandur, Kanthur-Murnad, Napoklu, Sampaje, Bhagamandala, Cheyyandane (Nariyandada) and Kadagadalu. Somwarpet taluk: Kodlipet, Gopalapura, Shantalli I, Kudige, Hebbale, Kushalnagar, Valnur-Tygathur, Madapura, Sunticoppa and Hanagallu.
