VIJAYAWADA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded that the police immediately release the party's district secretary, V. Umamheswara Rao, and activists of the Rythu Sangham who were arrested on Wednesday for obstructing the commencement of works on Polavaram project 7th reach without announcing a rehabilitation package for the affected farmers. Enraged over the arrests, the CPI (M) leaders and activists led by the party's State secretariat member, Y. Venkateswara Rao, staged a dharna in front of the Sub-Collector's office on Thursday morning. The CPI (M) city secretary, Ch. Babu Rao, and other senior leaders of the party and Rythu Sangham participated in the dharna and raised slogans against the "highhanded" behaviour of the police in arresting the peacefully agitating people and registering non-bailable cases against them. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Venkateswara Rao demanded that the Government announce a compensation package to farmers who would lose their landholdings due to the project. When the District Collector, K. Prabahakara Reddy, assured that he would take up the matter pertaining to compensation package and a change in the project design with the authorities concerned before May 10, where was the need for the Irrigation Department officials to commence the works in such hurry. "How can the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, claim his Government to be farmer-friendly when it is not ready to come out clearly on the rehabilitation and compensation package for the affected farmers?" he questioned demanding that the Government at least now realise the gravity of the situation and compensate the farmers suitably before commencing the works. The senior CPI (M) leader recalled that the party welcomed the Government's decision to take up pending irrigation project, but it wanted the Government to announce rehabilitation package for farmers at the same time. In this context, he cited the suicides committed by farmers who surrendered their lands for the Srisailam project and did not get the compensation at the right time and said that the CPI (M) would not allow recurrence of a similar situation in this case. The party, according to Mr. Venkateswara Rao, would also oppose any attempts by the Government to suppress the voice of the affected farmers by force.
