`Delimitation exercise not above board'

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The former Minister and Congress leader H. Vishwanath said here on Thursday that the party will approach the Karnataka High Court to seek a stay on the ongoing delimitation of zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat constituencies in the State.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Vishwanath said the delimitation process has been undertaken solely to facilitate the victory of Janata Dal (Secular) candidates in the coming zilla and taluk panchayat elections and is, hence, politically motivated. He said the delimitation exercise is being undertaken by district-level officials and Deputy Commissioners all over the State, and nobody is prepared to show the draft copy of the delimitation exercise carried out so far. The officials have lost their independence and are being forced to work for a political party, which is a violation of the law.

Mr. Vishwanath alleged that no guidelines are being followed in the ongoing exercise and the rule is that a group of villages coming under a particular gram panchayat should be listed in one taluk panchayat. "But there are instances where villages under one gram panchayat have been classified under different taluk panchayats," he claimed.
