Big turnout for the spectacular event

Staff Reporter

NELLORE: Jubilation and scenes of joy were witnessed in the tiny island of Sriharikota of Nellore district on Thursday immediately after the PSLV-6, carrying the remote sensing satellite CARTOSAT-1 and the piggyback satellite, HAMSAT, was successfully launched.

Hours before the launching, hundreds of people, including a number of boys and girls, occupied vantage positions on the terraces of houses to have a glimpse of the launch. As schools were closed for summer vacation, the turnout of students was large. Some of the inhabitants even climbed trees to witness the thrilling scene. Press persons from different parts of the country were no exception as they rushed on to the terrace of Brahma Prakash Auditorium, minutes before the launch. However, failure of audio system, announcing the countdown time, for sometime caused disappointment. But the system was soon restored.

Proud moment

At the end of final countdown time, the satellite capsule was not visible leading to whisperings among spectators. However, it took off at the designated time, but in view of a huge row of tall trees it was not visible just for two seconds. Soon the roaring sound of the vehicle and its menacing approach towards the orbit, led to non-stop clapping by the crowd.

In the town, it was yet another day of rejoicing as India once again proved its supremacy in the field of space technology, hitherto considered to be the exclusive bastion of a few so-called developed countries.

Tight security

In view of the visit of the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, and a host of VIPs, there was unprecedented security in and around the Sriharikota area.
