KURNOOL: Forest officials said that some 250 blackbuck were caught so far at Rollapadu Great Indian Bustard sanctuary and Aluru area as part of `Operation Blackbuck' to reduce the crop damage. Last year, the Government sanctioned Rs. 1 crore out of which Rs 60 lakhs was spent on procuring the equipment. The Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Srikantanatha Reddy, said around 500 animals would be caught and relocated before July. The department sought for an amount of Rs. 5 crores this year to speed up the work. The Collector, Vikas Raj, reviewed the activities with the officers concerning regular, social forestry and forest protection measures here on Thursday.
Social forest development
The meeting cleared the proposal for social forest development with an outlay of Rs. 1 crore. Rs. 35 lakhs was allocated for raising nurseries, Rs 30 lakhs for covering new areas with new plantations, Rs 11 lakhs for maintenance of old nurseries and Rs 20 lakhs for supporting old plantations. The Collector suggested that only plant species in demand be raised at nurseries. The forest staff was asked not to plant trees on private lands. The DFOs, Visweswaraiah, Srinivasa Reddy, Adivappa and others attended the meeting. At a meeting of Municipal Commissioners, the Collector asked them to list issues to be taken up during Nagara baata programme saying it was right time to look at urban problems. The RDO and Special officer for Dhone, Suryaprakasa Reddy, was asked to take up visible works in the town to improve the infrastructure and administration to municipality level.
