Rs. 38 crores has been earmarked for the purpose

CUDDAPAH: The Government will implement `Rajiv Kreeda Vikas' to promote rural sports in the State, the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh Chairman, M.S. Raj Thakur, said on Thursday.

World Kabaddi tourney

An outlay of Rs. 38 crores was earmarked to promote rural sports, he told a press conference here. Kabaddi, kho kho and other rural sports that were dormant would be popularised, he stated.

A common sports calendar was formulated and summer camps and seminars would be conducted for sportspersons in the State, he added.

A World women's kabaddi tournament and National Hockey Championship would be held in August, Mr. Raj Thakur, said. Eleven mini-stadia would be built in Cuddapah district, as part of seven projects proposed, with an outlay of Rs. 9.72 crores, he said. An indoor stadium was sanctioned at Cuddapah at a cost of Rs. 1.20 crores, he added.

Proposals to set up a regional sports school with Rs. 18 crores were forwarded to the Government, he said.

Playgrounds would be set up in six villages in each mandal in the district, he added. Talented sportspersons would be identified and imparted specialised training to enable them to excel in the national and international sports arena, Mr. Raj Thakur said.

Sports schools

Three sports schools that were sanctioned in Cuddapah, Visakhapatnam and Karimnagar would become functional within the next one and half years, the SAAP chairman said.

The number of rural sports academies in the State would be enhanced from 14 to 30, he said. One hundred coaches would be recruited in vacant posts and they would tour villages to give a fillip to rural sports, he added.

The Regional Deputy Director of Sports, Subba Rao, also took part. Earlier, he inspected the sites for mini-stadia proposed at Pulivendula and Chinnarangapuram near Muddanur.

Speaking to newsmen at Pulivendula, he assured construction of mini-stadia in all mandal headquarters based on the budgetary allocations.
