CHANDIGARH: In view of several cases of Meningococemia and Meningitis being reported from neighbouring Delhi, the Haryana Government has declared a red alert in the State. A spokesman of the State Health Department said here on Thursday that instructions had been issued to all civil surgeons to be extra vigilant and in case of detection of any such case, they should immediately inform the office of the Director General Health Services. Instructions to keep isolation wards ready and equipped with all life saving drugs and other medicines like antibiotics and intravenous fluids have also been issued. They had also been directed to create awareness among people regarding signs, symptoms and treatment about the disease. The department is also conducting general mass surveys to detect any person suffering from any of the symptoms of meningitis. Those suffering from any disease were being asked to report to the nearest health institution where they would be diagnosed and given treatment. Also, those coming in their contact would be examined and treated, if necessary. He said that the cause of Meningitis was a bacteria known as grame negative diplococcic maningo coccus. As per the symptoms, the patient could suffer from high grade fever, body ache, body rashes, vomiting and sore throat. The signs of the disease included rigidity of neck, rashes, altered sensorium and shock, he added. -- PTI
