CHENNAI: Civic problems along the Grand South Trunk Road at Pallavaram, including encroachments and bad road conditions, were discussed at a recent street-corner meeting organised by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) at Pallavaram. The party members said the encroachments behind the Pallavaram bus stand led to congestion. A portion of land behind the bus shelter, encroached upon by a private company, could be cleared and the bus shelter pushed back so that the carriageway was widened. Several shops had also encroached upon the public land behind the bus shelter.
`Toilet needed'
A public toilet could be constructed for train and bus commuters, the members said. The office of the Village Administrative Officer could be shifted to the main road. The Pallavaram police station, functioning on rented premises, could be shifted to the nearby Thangavel Kalyana Mandapam building, which was lying in a state of disuse. Besides, the low road divider for the bus bay at the Pallavaram bus stop should be removed immediately as it was the cause for a few accidents. S.P. Gandhi, CPI (M) local committee member, S. Narasimhan, councillor and V. Santhanam of the local committee participated.
