CHENNAI: Despite the Metropolitan Transport Corporation operating nearly 50 services everyday between Parrys Corner and northern fringes such as Red Hills, Padiyanallur and Karanodai terminus, autorickshaws, share autos and maxi cabs are in great demand. Commuters in these areas agreed that they were able to get buses every five minutes in the morning peak hours, but these buses were extremely crowded. While most of them demand more services, elected village heads of villages in the north western fringes say shuttle services from Red Hills to Madhavaram or Padi junction can solve the problem to some extent. While most of the commuters are labourers or students, there are also traders in food stuff and flowers, who come from villages such as Gnayiru, which is known for its vegetables and roses, about 7 km off the national highway. At Puzhal and Red Hills junctions, the traffic chaos is compounded because of the parking of a large numbers of trucks that ferry goods, including consignments of rice meant for mills in Red Hills and Padiyanallur areas. This slows down the traffic flow on the Grand National Trunk Road (Chennai-Kolkota National Highway), residents say and note that they prefer to take auto rickshaws and vans that can move away from the highway into the lanes to reach their destinations on time. Padiyanallur panchayat president Rajendran said he had given many representations to the authorities, both for increasing the bus services as also clearing the chaos on the national highway so that traffic flow can be smoother and faster. The area is also known for its ground water and rich top soil. This leads to heavy movement of water tankers and trucks carrying sand and bricks from hundreds of kilns along both sides of the Kortaliyar that flows from the west to east on the northern border of the metropolis. At Puzhal and Red Hills junctions, the traffic chaos is compounded because of the parking of a large numbers of trucks.
