Work on East Coast Road project begins

The project involves laying bitumen road from Tuticorin to Cuddalore

RAMANATHAPURAM: Work has started on the much-awaited Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project (East Coast Road Project).

The World Bank-aided Rs. 2,150 crore-project has been divided into five packages.

The plan is to lay first-class bitumen road from Tuticorin to Cuddalore along the coastal districts, including Ramanthapuram, Pudukottai and Nagapattinam.

The project also aims at repairing and relaying some other prominent roads.

Larson and Toubro Limited took package-III contract from Kattumavadi in Pudukottai district to Ramanathapuram. The 99-km stretch will be laid at a cost of Rs.120 crores.

The company has agreed to complete the work in 36 months. It runs through Kattumavadi, Thondi, Thirupalakudi, Devipattinam and Ramanathapuram. It will have seven-metre width of bitumen road and two-metre shoulder road.

The company has started the work at Pathanenthal near Thondi in Ramanathapuram district. Though the actual work will take a few more weeks, clearing of bushes, removal of mud and sand, marking of areas, mobilisation of men and material and verification of alignment have started.
