MANGALORE: The people of Mulky will soon hold a rally and a public meeting to draw the attention of the Government towards their long-standing demand to have Mangalore as their court of first appeal instead of Moodbidri or Karkala. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, senior advocate and social activist Dinesh Hegde Ulepadi said that the litigants of Mulky hobli have been put to hardships after the establishment of a Munsiff court in Moodbidri recently, with the appellate court for higher value and sentence being in Karkala and Mangalore. The litigant in Mulky is made to travel to three places in search of justice, he said. Mr. Ulepadi said Mulky town had its own Munsiff court in the 1980s it was shifted to Karkala. Recently the Munsiff court was established in Moodbidri and the Karkala court was upgraded to a senior court. He said that majority of the cases filed in the courts were from Mulky, Kinnigoli, Aikala, Haleyangadi, Sasihitlu and other places up to Surathkal. These places are also situated on both sides of the National Highway 17 that leads to Mangalore. He recalled that in 2001, the High Court of Karnataka issued a notification to attach Mulky to the magisterial jurisdiction of Mangalore but successive State Governments did not heed it. A public awareness meeting will be organised on May 8 in Mulky to decide the future course of action, he said. The former president of the Karnataka State Kannada Sahitya Parishat Harikrishna Punaroor was present at the press meet.
