Rapist agrees to marry victim, acquitted

MUMBAI: A Sessions court here has acquitted an accused in a rape case after he agreed to marry the victim.

According to the public prosecutor, just before pronouncing the sentence on Tuesday, the judge asked the girl if she wanted to say anything. The girl said she would forgive 25-year-old Firoz Shaikh provided he married her. Shaikh agreed to this.

The judge, however, directed the police to escort the two at the wedding so that the accused does not escape.

Shaikh, a painter, promised to marry her and gained her confidence. Later, he raped her and offered her Rs. 700. He threatened her with dire consequences if she talked about the rape to anybody. However, the girl's sister learnt about the incident and filed a complaint with police.

This is the girl's second rape case.. PTI
