Water level

MADURAI : The level in the Periyar dam stood at 112.1 feet with no inflow and discharge. The level in the Vaigai dam was 30.74 feet with an inflow of 58 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 1583 mcft.

Kallandiri registered the highest rainfall of 98.2 mm in the region in the last 24 hours, followed by Idayapattti 72.4, Chittampatti 51, Uthamapalayam 50, Sathaiyar dam 36, Veerapandi 34, Mettupatti 30, Madurai 26, Pulipatti 25, Sothuparai dam and Andipatti 24 each, Vaigai dam 16, Thaniyamangalam 12, Shanmuganadhi 10, Kuppanampatti 8, Melur 7 and Peranai 1.6.

Two killed in

car-lorry smash

Two persons were killed and three others injured in a car-lorry collision near Tirumangalam near here on Thursday.

According to police sources, the lorry driver, A. Kumar (59) of Kancheepuram, was attending to a repair on the Tirumangalam-T. Kallupatti Road when a car hit the stationary vehicle from behind. While Kumar died on the spot, one of the passengers travelling in the car, G. Subramanian (50) of Palanganatham, died on way to hospital.

S. Kannan (35), his wife, K. Manju (30), and K. Manikandan (28) of Madurai suffered minor injuries and were admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital here. The car was returning to Madurai from T. Kallupatti when the accident took place.

The Tirumangalam (Taluk) police have registered a case.

Power shutdown

There will be no power supply between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on May 7 in the following areas owing to maintenance work to be carried out in the Vadipatti sub-station:

Vadipatti, Katchaikatti, Rayapuram, Semminipatti, Kulasekeranpatti, Kutladampatti, Ramiayanpatti, Chockalingapuram, Thethur, Kolinjipatti, T. Mettupatti, Vadugapatti, Aundipatti, Kattakulam, Mettuneerthen and Nagari.

Computer training

A training programme on computers was inaugurated for women police recruits at the Police Recruit School (Temporary) here on Wednesday. The Superintendent of Police, T. Sundaresan, inaugurated the weeklong programme, organised in association with the SACS MAVMM Engineering College, according to a press release.
