THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Ombudsman for Local Self-Government institutions, T.K. Chandrasekhara Das, has directed the City Corporation to render free treatment to those who are bitten by stray dogs. The order was issued on Wednesday on the basis of a complaint filed by the A. Gopakumar, zonal president of the Federation of Residents' Associations Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT), against the growing menace of stray and rabid dogs in the city. The Corporation secretary had informed the forum that a meeting chaired by the Mayor on Tuesday decided to kill all stray dogs on a war footing. Besides, the civic body was conducting an animal birth control programme at the veterinary hospital at the PMG Junction. The order said it was a good thing that the Corporation was taking action in the matter, though belatedly. All the health centres under the civic body should be supplied with adequate dosages of anti-rabies vaccine. The Corporation should not charge any cost from the victims who take the first dose of medicine from the health centres, the order said. The rest of the treatment should be rendered free of cost or otherwise, depending on the financial capacity of the victims. The forum also directed that the Government fill up the vacancies of doctors in all the public health centres run by the civic body without delay. The civic body should continue to eliminate stray dogs till the city was free of the menace, it added.
