Ensure excellence in library services: Vice-Chancellor

Staff Reporter

Higher education system In Kerala yet to become library-centric

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Libraries in the State, especially those in universities, should ensure quality and excellence in their services as libraries are the `front offices' of the higher education sector, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kerala, M.K. Ramachandran Nair, has said.

He was inaugurating a national seminar on `Towards Excellence in Higher Education in Kerala through IT-enabled Library and Information System,' organised by the Kerala Library Association here today. "Very often, a university is known after its library," Mr. Ramachandran Nair said.

Though there are professionals working in libraries, the style of functioning of the libraries is unprofessional.

Resistance to change

The role of the library has become more vital. However, there is also great resistance to change among those in the education sector. The last decade has witnessed very little change and development because of this resistance, he added.

In his presidential address the former librarian of the University Library K. A. Isaac said the higher education system here is yet to become library-centric. Even now the situation is such that students can easily by-pass the libraries and still do well in examinations.

"If a library suddenly vanishes from a college, it will be some time before that is noticed. If the college canteen vanishes, it would be noticed immediately," he added.

The need of the hour is to have a holistic view of the education process wherein libraries are integral part of learning which is one continuous process from the kindergarten to the highest level, he said.

The former Vice-Chancellor of the Kannur University P. K. Rajan, litterateur, George Onakkoor and the KLA president, N. Paramesaran also spoke on the occasion.
