BANGALORE: Increasing industrial growth and pollution from vehicles in the city is making people prone to lung diseases, including asthma, T. Rajeshwari, Principal of Bangalore Medical College, said here on Thursday. Speaking at a function organised by the SDS TB and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases to observe World Asthma Day, Dr. Rajeshwari said nearly six lakh people are affected by various lung diseases. Apart from pollen and pollutants in the air in Bangalore, the growing trend of living and working in closed spaces because of the presence of air conditioners, and subsequent lack of ventilation, was contributing to the spread of such diseases, she said. She asked the SDS TB and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases to organise orientation programmes for general practitioners in the prevention and treatment of asthma and other lung diseases. On the occasion, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Rajiv Gandhi Institute and Mysore Minerals for periodic screening of miners working for the company. Jija Hari Singh, Managing Director of Mysore Minerals, and Shashidhar Buggi, Medical Superintendent of the institute, signed the document. Ms. Jija Hari Singh inaugurated the programme and released a book on environment by Shashi Sharma. A booklet on the various chest diseases and the services available at the institute was released.
