HYDERABAD: All that glitters is not gold, but all that glitters with BIS Hallmark is 22 carat gold! This is what the awareness programme on Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery organised by the local branch of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for the benefit of jewellers and consumers emphasised here on Thursday. The hallmarking of gold would give value for money to the consumers and credibility to the jewellers, said Satwant Reddy, Director General, BIS, New Delhi. To give a boost to the hallmarking system set up on par with international norms, at least one assaying centre would be set up in each district by the Government, she said. In the first phase, 100 centres would be set up, including one in the city. Though the Hallmarking certification of gold scheme was launched in 2000 with the objective of protecting the interests of consumers and improving the brand equity of Indian jewellery in the international market, not many jewellers came forward to apply for licence under the scheme, said the Additional Director-General, BIS, Y.P. Singh.
