City to get 50 more condom vending machines

Divya Ramamurthi

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Aids Control Society (KSAPS) is now planning to expand the programme of providing condom vending machines to 50 more toilets in the city as well as to introduce it in cinemas.

It has successfully provided condom vending machines in 50 Sulabh toilets in the city.

Sanction

"We have received sanction for the expansion from the National Aids Control Society.

"We hope to get the money in a few months and will start immediately thereafter," says N. Seethalakshmi, additional project director, KSAPS.

The condom vending machines were introduced in toilets last December.

The machines are concentrated in toilets around markets, railway stations and bus stops such as Russel Market, the bus stands near Mahavir Jain Hospital on Millers Road and in Shivaji Nagar and close to family planning association centres.

Role of NGOs

S.C. Dharwad, Deputy Director Planning of the KSAPS Sexually Transmitted Disease Wing, says the usage of condoms from the toilets have been "quite good".

He says the programme has done well because KSAPS has associated with non-government organisations (NGOs) to promote condom awareness in these areas.

"Before the project started, we got NGOs working in the area to speak to the public there and also had demonstration on how the condom should be used," he says. KSAPS is planning to carry out an evaluation of the project shortly.

Surveillance

The sentinel surveillance data of KSAPS estimated that 50,000 adults in the State were infected by HIV/AIDS in 2004.

The HIV prevalence levels ranged from 1.5 per cent among women at antenatal clinics to 21.6 per cent for female sex workers.

The percentage of pregnant women who tested positive at antenatal clinics in Bangalore rural district was 2.5 per cent and 0.6 per cent in Bangalore urban district.

KSAPS is also planning to expand the programme to other districts.

It has made condoms available in the districts through fair price stores.

"Once our expansion plans here have been completed we will start work in the districts," says Dr. Dharwad.
