Northern Railway to open 28 new reservation centres

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: To help people get reserved train tickets without any hassle, Northern Railway has decided to open 28 new computerised passenger reservation centres in the entire zone including the Capital.

Interestingly, Northern Railway was the pioneer in the introduction of computerised reserved tickets with the launch of a pilot project in 1984-85 at New Delhi railway station. The project was started with two trains leaving from New Delhi. Subsequently, the system was formally inaugurated on February 19,1986, and the facility was extended to 32 trains.

Following the tremendous success of this project, this technology was made available at four other cities -- Secunderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai. Gradually, the computerised reservation systems were opened in other locations. Another major development was the integration of the five PRS centres in April 1999.

Today this system covers district headquarters across the country handling 1.25 lakh reservation transactions per day booking over 5.5-lakh seats and berths, and this figure during festivals and summer season goes up to 7.5 lakhs.

Interestingly, in this nationwide network, Delhi PRS plays a significant role as it deals with reservation for 964 trains providing connectivity to five zonal railways. A total of 338 PRS locations are connected to Delhi PRS out of which 175 are on Northern Railway, 30 in the Delhi area and 163 in North Eastern Railway, North Central Railway, North Western Railway and part of East Coast Railway.
