`Court directive not followed'
The general secretary S. Abdul Majid, said when the government abruptly changed the ratio from 5:96 to 2: 99, his organisation obtained a stay from the Madras High Court. The court observed that the government ought to implement the ratio at 2:80 and 3: above 81. However, when the government went in for an appeal, the court allowed the government to continue the 2:99 ratio with a condition that if the teachers felt if it was not practicable to cover the portions with inadequate strength, they could approach the government to suitably alter it, and the latter was duty bound to concede their demand, in the interest of the primary education. Admission to B.Tech courses
About 3,500 candidates (3,054 boys and 446 girls) from 24 States were invited for counselling for 1,071 vacancies, says a release. Special Correspondent
Documents notified
They are passport, permanent account number card issued by the Income Tax department, identity cards issued by the railways, documents relating to pension/family pension for ex-servicemen and their wards, freedom fighter identity cards, arms licence, identity cards issued by the Central/State Government companies local bodies or public limited companies, driving licence or land title/documents relating to registration of property. The following documents should have been registered or issued before March 31, 2005: bank/kissan/post office passbooks; student identity cards issued by recognised educational institutions; ration cards; SC/ST/OBC certificates and documents issued by the Rehabilitation Department to handicapped persons, says an official release. Ration rice seized
Following a tip-off, District Revenue Officer M. Karunakaran ordered surprise checks. The teams raided a premises at A.K.S. Nagar in Selvapuram and found 173 bags of rice worth Rs. 83,000. The rice was confiscated and action initiated under the Essential Commodities Act. The officials seized 3,900 kg of rice worth Rs. 46,800, says an official release. Staff Reporter

Warning to schools
In a release issued here today, he said that 81 nursery and primary schools had got proper recognition in the district. Hundred nursery and primary schools have not got proper recognition.
Power shutdown

Gold ornaments looted from house
The police said burglars entered the house of Arumugam (59), a retired inspector of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, and stole the valuables. He had bought the ornaments for her daughter's marriage with his retirement benefits. Staff Reporter.
Compound walls damaged in blast
Eyewitnesses said the labourers detonated the rocks with the explosives when they dug the trench to lay pipes at North Balabhagya Nagar this evening. Though they had taken some "precautionary measures," some pieces of rocks flew and hit the compound walls of the houses. The work was stopped for a while. Staff Reporter.

According to the police, Mohamed Anand and Ravi attacked Velsubramaniam and his brother, Ramasubramaniam, with a spear, owing to enmity. Velsubramaniam was later admitted to Tuticorin Government Hospital with severe injuries. Ramasubramaniam suffered minor injuries. The Eral police are investigating. Staff Reporter

autorickshaws
At a function held here on Friday morning, senior revenue officials handed over the Registration Certificate books to the beneficiaries. Official sources said the vehicles were procured at a cost of Rs.25.01 lakhs. Of the total amount, Rs.18.75 lakhs was generated as term loan and Rs.3.48 lakh as margin money loan, from Tamil Nadu Industrial Cooperative Bank, while the remainder was generated from the personal savings of the beneficiaries.
