Special Correspondent

POOJA BEFORE TAKE-OFF: Vijay Mallya performing pooja under the nose of the boeing of his Kingfisher Airline which flew into Tirupati airport on Friday on a pre-launch flight.

TIRUPATI: The liquor baron, Vijay Mallya, on Friday performed special poojas at the airport here for the first aircraft of his Kingfisher Airlines, due for its inaugural flight between Mumbai and Bangalore on May 9. Mr. Mallya, accompanied by his wife and others, landed at the airport in the aircraft -- a Boeing -- at around 9.15 a.m.

Mr. Mallya was keen that his first aircraft should first touch down at the Tirupati airport before it began its commercial operations. The Mallyas performed the pooja right under the shiny nose of the Boeing.

After the pooja, the couple along with the crew and others offered prayers at the Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirumala. They then left for Mumbai.

BPCL bags business

Another highlight of the programme was that public sector Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), which bagged the refuelling business of Kingfisher Airlines, loaded some 6,0000 litres of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) into the aircraft at a brief ceremony.

According to the BPCL Director, Marketing, S. Radhakrishnan the refuelling tie-up with the airlines was a step ahead in meeting the buoyancy in the aviation market which promised to redefine air travel in India.

The corporation had refuelled the first aircraft of Kingfisher Airlines in Delhi on the April 27 as it landed in India on its maiden flight from Toulouse, France. The BPCL's airport station manager, G. Malla Reddy, spoke.

Mr. Mallya told newsmen at Tirumala that his company would, over a period of time, acquire 33 Airbus aircraft at a cost of Rs. 8,000 crores. Of these, 11 would be acquired by the year-end.
