GE Elfun Volunteers donate boats to fishermen

CHENNAI: GE Elfun Volunteers, a global community service organization of General Electric Company, is donating 10 new fibreglass boats and fishing nets, worth Rs. 12.5 lakhs, to fishermen of tsunami-hit Pudhu Kalpakkam village, near Chennai.

Scott Bayman, president and CEO, GE India, delivered the first batch of seven boats and fishing nets recently to the fishermen of Pudhu Kalpakkam Village Co-operative Society.

The boats and fishing nets will be shared among the 220 families in this fishing hamlet.

The company's employees and its businesses all over India have contributed over Rs. 2 crore towards the cause and GE Elfun

1,000 man-hours in relief

Volunteers in Chennai and Hyderabad have committed more than 1,000 man-hours in relief and rehabilitation efforts so far.

Mr. Bayman, President & CEO, GE India, said, "Now, our efforts are centred on long-term recovery with special focus on helping the tsunami-affected regain their lost livelihood and education for impacted children."

GE Elfun Volunteers - Chennai chapter has also tied up with the Rotary Club of Chennapatna to construct a new primary school at Chinnakuppam village besides enhancing basic amenities in existing government schools in the region.

A compound wall costing Rs.15 lakhs has been constructed with the help of GE Elfun Volunteers at the government higher secondary school Nemmeli.
