NEW DELHI: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has assured the tsunami-hit in the Andaman and Nicobar islands that permanent shelters would be built for them this year. Prototype houses have been erected for the purpose. He praised the courage and spirit of the people of the Islands in bouncing back after the tsunami devastation. During his three-day tour of the Islands, he visited Port Blair, Car Nicobar, Teressa and Campbell Bay Islands and held discussions with officials and Tribal Councils on long-term rehabilitation plans. Interacting with children, Mr. Kalam allayed their fears that the tsunami could hit again. He told them that experts had said such a phenomenon took place only once in hundreds of years and hence there was no cause for fear. Mr. Kalam also visited the Command Headquarters at Port Blair and Air Force Station at Car Nicobar where he addressed jawans.
