PONDICHERRY: Lt Governor M M Lakhera has called for firm steps to promote literacy among women and their empowerment. Addressing the celebrations of the World Red Cross Day organised by Pondicherry of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) here on Sunday, Lakhera said that the participation of women in decision-making was essential. He hoped that the civic polls would be held soon to ensure participation of women in decision-making. The Director of Health and Family Welfare Services and Secretary of State unit of the IRCS, G. Subramanyam Reddy who welcomed those present said that the membership of the Society in Pondicherry had increased considerably. The Society had spent around Rs 1.25 lakhs for various relief works after the tsunami that struck the Union Territory of Pondicherry on December 26. Ms Pushpa Lakhera distributed prizes to those proficient in essay competition conducted by the Society on `human dignity and focus on women'. The Chairperson of Pondicherry State Women`s Commission Kamalini and president of Pondicherry Women`s Conference M K Sayeekumari were among those who highlighted the role of the IRCS.
