Kamban fest to start on May 13

Staff Reporter

It will be held for the 40th successive year

PONDICHERRY: The three-day annual Kamban festival conducted by the Pondicherry Kamban Kazhagam will begin at the Kamban Kalai Arangam here on May 13.

The president of the Kazhagam N Govindasamy and its Secretary T. Murugesan told a press conference here on Sunday that this would be the 40th year in succession that the Kazhagam was holding the festival.

Lt Governor M.M. Lakhera will inaugurate the festival in keeping with the tradition that the Head of the State set the programme in motion.

The Judge of the Madras High Court Justice M Karpagavinayagam will preside over the inaugural function and Chief Minister N Rangasamy (the patron of the Kazhagam) and Speaker of the Pondicherry Assembly M D R Ramachandran will make special addresses.

Murugesan said that the opening day programme would honour the functionaries of the TamilNadu based Kamban Kazhagam in view of their organisations completing 25 years.

The festival will be marked by presentation of cash awards under different categories to students who topped competitions conducted by the Kazhagam on the magnum opus of the Tamil savant Kambar.

Poets' forum, moot court and distribution of prizes to children of the School of Physically and Visually impaired (run by Pondicherry Administration) to appreciate their talent in reciting the Kamba Ramayanam are also on the agenda.

Govindasamy said that the festival was meant to focus on the literary richness and moral lessons of the epic.

Vel Sokkanathan, a functionary of the Kazhagam, said that leading scholars from TamilNadu and a Tamil vidwan from Sri Lanka Vasantha Vaithianathan will speak at the festival.
