PONDICHERRY: Police on Saturday arrested a person who had allegedly cheated two shop owners in Pondicherry by submitting fake demand drafts of a public sector bank. The accused, Pandian, was dismissed from the Tamil Nadu police service six years ago, according to the police. He had on March 26 purchased goods from a TV showroom and gold coins from a jewellery mart by presenting fake demand drafts. A police team was formed to get him after the bank authorities and the shop owners registered a case. According to Sunil Garg, Senior Superintendent of Police, the team picked up Pandian when he was found moving in suspicious circumstances at Bharati Street here. The vital clue in the case was his photograph captured by a web cam at the TV show room, he added. He said Pandian had admitted about his involvement in the case. Police also seized all the goods that he purchased from the TV showroom and gold coins from the jewellery shop. A home theatre system worth Rs. 87,225 and gold coins worth Rs. 84,719 were restored to the respective owners on Sunday by the police. Police suspect that an inter-state gang is involved in the crime. The Tamil Nadu police and Karnataka police will be alerted soon. Police also feels that the DDs have been forged with the connivance of the bank staff. The bank authorities have been alerted to vet their staff and review the banking procedures. The police have appealed to businessmen to be more cautious in accepting DDs and verify them before acceptance. Mr. Garg also gave appreciation letters to B Srikanth, SP North and the police team from Grand Bazzar Station, which cracked the case quickly.
