Consumer clubs planned in 50 colleges across State

Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI: The State Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, Banwarlal, said the State Government would soon start a Consumer Club each in 50 degree colleges in the State on an experimental basis, to spread consumer awareness. Participating as the chief guest at the Rayalaseema regional meet of the Consumer Councils (CAPCO) at Tirupati on Sunday, Banwarlal said that Chittoor and Adilabad (Manchiryala) districts have been identified for setting up of district Consumer Information Centres which would coordinate the mandal level centres.

Quick lab results

He appealed to the district councils to make use of the services of the State Consumer Information Centre headquartered at Hyderabad to test samples of water sachets and mineral water bottles. They will provide the results in three days and take legal action against errant companies.

In a representation presented to the State Commissioner at the meet, the need for setting up a laboratory each in all districts was highlighted as the one operating at Hyderabad for the entire State was resulting in abnormal delay in providing the results. The meet also called for stringent legislations to deal with fly-by-night finance and chit companies and private banks to save at least the future consumers. Another demand was to ensure that the summons issued by the District Consumer Councils were served fast avoiding inordinate delay.

Tall claims

The Vice-Chancellor of SV University, S. Jayarama Reddy, inaugurating the meet expressed concern over the tall claims made regarding products and wanted laws to make manufacturers accountable for these claims.

The State president of the AP Consumer Council's Federation, V. Gowrisankar, and president of the Chittoor district council , Raja Reddy, participated.
