Kottayam girls win title

KOTTAYAM: Kottayam won the title in the girls' section of the 22nd Youth State basketball championship at the Lourdes Public School and Junior college floodlit courts here on Sunday.

Kottayam drubbed Pathanamthitta 67-38 after leading 34-22 at half-time. Alappuzha took the third spot in girls' section after it defeated Kannur 43-25.

Kottayam is in line for a double after its boys' team entered the final with a 61-56 win over Alappuzha. The host will meet Thiruvananthapuram in the final. Thiruvananthapuram thrashed Thrissur 56-20 in the other semifinal.

The results:

Boys: Loser's final: Alappuzha 60 (Ashin Xavier 22, Johnny Cherian 14, Nithin 11) bt Thrissur 57 (Avin P. Jose 16, Jithin Paul 11).

Semifinals: Thiruvananthapuram 56 (Al-Ameen 15, Umesh Krishnan 12, M.S. Nithin 11) bt Thrissur 20; Kottayam 61 (Shijoy 22) bt Alappuzha 56 (Johnny Cherian 22).

Girls (final): Kottayam 67 (Shija Joseph 21, K.S. Anu 17, Archana P. Nair 12, Ashy Mathew 10) bt Pathanamhitta 38.

Loser's final: Alappuzha 43 (Lucy George 25) bt Kannur 25 (V.K. Priyanka 14).
