DA sought for Government staff

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union has demanded sanction of DA for the Government staff from January 2005 to mark completion of one year in office by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy as was done by the Centre.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, B. Mohan Reddy, president, and P. Sudhakar Reddy, general secretary, said it was normal practice for the State to follow the example of the Centre to release DA without the employees' organisations making the demand. - Staff Reporter

NSUI leader's suspension revoked

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee has revoked the suspension of the former National Students' Union of India president, Ponnam Prabhakar.

The APCC general secretary, K. Yadava Reddy, in a statement on Sunday, said that Mr. Prabhakar was re-admitted into the party with immediate effect. Mr. Prabhakar was suspended from the party for contesting the Assembly election as a rebel candidate against the Endowment Minister, M. Satyanaryana Rao, from Karimnagar. - Staff Reporter

Office-bearers of rights forum

NALGONDA: Burra Ramulu and K. Balagopal have been elected president and general secretary of the Human Rights Forum (HRF) respectively.

At the end of the two-day maiden State conference of the HRF at Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district on Sunday, delegates elected P. Subba Rao (Miryalaguda), G. Narendranath (Chittoor), S.M. Basha (Anantapur) and S. Jeevan Kumar (Hydarabad) vice-presidents. The secretaries are V.S. Krishna (Vizag), A. Subramanyam (Nellore) and G. Mohan (Nalgonda).

The police engaged a videographer to shoot the conference proceedings. - Staff Reporter

Boy dies of diarrhoea

NELLORE: An eight-year-old boy died and several persons were affected by diarrhoea in the labour colony of Sastish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) here.

According to the DM&HO, Badruddin, it might be due to worm infection. - Staff Reporter

Housing board workers' row

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Housing Board, which is facing protests by its retrenched staff, has said as per the operative part of the interim orders passed by the High Court, status quo will be maintained as far sweepers are concerned till June 7, when the next hearing takes place.

A spokesman of APHB said here on Sunday that status quo orders were also applicable to the class four employees and not work charged employees/NMRs. And, the board was not engaging third party/private service provider for any of the jobs being done by work charged employees or NMRs. For, other categories there was no status quo, he added. - Staff Reporter

Goods train derails

VIZIANAGARAM: Two wagons of a goods train going towards Rayagada from Visakhapatnam jumped off the track at Bobbili on Sunday morning.

This was the second derailment at the same spot during the last 36 hours. On Friday evening, a goods train derailed.

The Divisional Railway Manager from Visakhapatnam, K.S. Arya, appointed a three-man committee to inquire into the derailment. - Correspondent

NIZAMABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha State president, D. Pradeep Kumar, has asked the Congress Government to release a white paper on its achievements during its one year rule in the State.

schedule announced

CHITTOOR: The District Collector, S. S. Rawath, has announced Praja Patham programme schedule to be held from May 9 to 13 at a meeting here on Sunday. He instructed the officers to conduct mandal level meetings on May 9 and 10 to discuss drinking water problem, electricity, employment generation and disposal of prajahitha petitions.

On May 11, the officers will conduct meetings with people's representatives and discuss the action taken on the problems received during Praja Patham.

On May 12, district level meeting will be held relating to Praja Patham in which MLAs, MPs, mandal prajaparishad presidents and ZPTC members will participate. - Correspondent

Farmers training centre

CHITTOOR: Farmers training centre would be established at Chittoor in order to make them utilise the services of the bank properly, said R.S.N.Moorthy, deputy general manager of Indian Bank, while assuming charge here. He said that a proposal for this has been sent to the Government for approval. He targeted to generate business worth about Rs. 1,000 crores in 2005. - Correspondent

International Red Cross Day

CHITTOOR: The District Collector, S. S. Rawath, flagged of a rally of NCC students and others conducted here on Sunday in connection with the International Red Cross Day. Speaking on the occasion, he urged the people to donate blood liberally to enable the Red Cross Society to distribute the blood to the poor, besides supplying to the defence organisations for helping the soldiers who were safeguarding the frontiers of the country. - Correspondent

Kuchipudi dance fete from May 13

CUDDAPAH: A three-day Kuchipudi dance festival will be held at Kalakshetram here from May 13 to 15, the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, said on Sunday.

The State Cultural Affairs Department and the district administration were conducting the festival, wherein Kuchipudi dance troupes from Hyderabad would performe, he said in a statement. - Staff Reporter

Rythu club Inaugurated

CUDDAPAH: The SBI chief manager (agri business), C.V. Nagaraja Rao, inaugurated a rythu club at Indluru village, under the SBI Chilamakur branch, the 13th one in the district.

Rythu clubs will help farmers procure qualitative inputs, provide marketing and bank loan facilities, Mr. Rao said. The SBI marketing team leader, Muralidhar and Chilamakur branch manager, Bhagavan Singh, also took part. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: B. Ravi Kumar Reddy, a student of Sri Chaitanya Institutions, has bagged all India second rank in the entrance examination by the prestigious Vellore Institute of Technology.

Aid to heart disease victim's family

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has assured to release before May 10 the Government assistance of Rs. 50,000 to the family of Tummalapalli Shobhan of Sanigaram village (Karimnagar district) who died last year of heart ailment. Dr. Reddy gave this assurance following a representation made by the BJP MLA, G. Kishan Reddy. He said in a press release here on Sunday that the amount would be handed over to the boy's father. The MLA made the representation since the assistance promised by the Chief Minister ten months back had not been paid. - Staff Reporter

Olympic Association elects new panel

NIZAMABAD: The Olympic Association district unit here on Sunday unanimously elected its new panel. The new body will be in office for four years. M. Rajender Reddy and B. Baga Reddy have been elected president and general secretary, respectively. The other members are: K. Sarala Mahender Reddy, G. Bakta Vatsala Naidu, A. Praveen Reddy and K. Ashok (vice-presidents).

Joint secretaries are: M. Gangadhar, B. Narasinga Rao and Mahipal Reddy and treasurer, D. Sailoo. Besides, ten members were elected executive members. The association former vice-president, Kuldeep Sahany, presided, while the MLA, B. Govardhan, acted as election officer. - Staff Reporter
