Meeting to clear VAT confusion

NEW DELHI: In the wake of an atmosphere of confusion and uncertainty over Value Added Tax (VAT), a delegation of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) is scheduled to meet the Economic Advisor to the Union Finance Minister, Parthasarthy Shome, here on Monday. The Secretary General, CAIT, Praveen Khandelwal, said during the proposed meeting the delegation would air its grievances concerning VAT and discuss other trade related issues.

Also, CAIT has convened a round table conference with the economists, economic columnists, tax advocates and consultants on the eve of the VAT panel meet on May 12.

Thalassemia seminar

NEW DELHI: New thalassemia wards would shortly be opened at Dr. Hedgewar and other hospitals in Delhi, the State Health Minister, Yoganand Shastri, announced on Sunday. He as addressing a daylong seminar on thalassemia held at the Maulana Azad Medical College auditorium here today.

The seminar was organised by the National Thalassemia Welfare Society in association with Department of Paediatrics, Maulana Azad Medical College and LNJP Hospital and Delhi Directorate of Health Services.

The Health Minister said a special awareness drive would be launched to educate the masses on the disease during the Thalassemia Awareness Week.

Must show channel

NEW DELHI: The Union Government has decided to include an educational channel of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), "Gyan Darshan'', in the must carry bouquet to be telecast by cable operators, the Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, H.P. Dikshit, said here on Sunday. He was speaking at the inauguration of a special teleconferencing session on the "Role of Information and Communication Technology in Reaching the Unreached''.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, K. Rahman Khan, stressed that no segment of our society should be deprived of the benefits of government policies.

Healthcare workshop

NEW DELHI: A two-day seminar-cum-workshop on health care informatics organised at the Ayurvigyan auditorium of Army Hospital (Research and Referral) under the aegis of Directorate General of Medical Services (Army) concluding here on Sunday.Inaugurating the function, the Vice-Chief of the Army Staff, Lt. Gen. B.S. Thakur, emphasised the need to make greater use of information and communication technology to provide improved healthcare facilities to soldiers deployed in the remotest corners of the country.
