JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government has extended the term of the Commission of Inquiry probing into the police firing on a crowd of farmers at Ghadsana and Raola in Sriganganagar district during their agitation in October 2004 and appointed an 18-member committee to make recommendations for optimum utilisation of the Indira Gandhi Canal waters. The State Government had agreed in a pact reached with the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti on December 11, 2004, that the quantity of the available canal waters would be assessed and provision made for proper distribution, management and utilisation of water. The committee will submit its report within the next three months. The notification extending the Inquiry Commission's term till November 10, 2005, was issued here on Friday. The Commission, headed by the former Judge of Rajasthan High Court, R.S. Kejriwal, was appointed on February 11 this year and was initially asked to submit its report by May 10. The State Irrigation Secretary, S.N. Thanvi, said here in a statement that the committee appointed to implement the agreement signed between the State Government and farmers would have four subject specialists and four farmers each from the Indira Gandhi Canal Project's first and second stages as its members. Besides, the committee will have four invited farmers. The former Chairman of the Central Water Commission, Suresh Chandra, had been nominated as the committee's chairman, while the subject specialists are the former Chairman of the Indira Gandhi Canal Board, S.K. Gupta, former Chief Engineer, K.S. Kang, former Director of Agriculture, B.S. Siddhu, and former Joint Director (Agriculture), Hari Mohan Gupta. Mr. Thanvi said the committee would evaluate the flowing water, losses in the distribution of water and the illegal use of water before making recommendations for the utilisation of water. Besides, it will also analyse the agriculture and irrigation systems for getting maximum harvest for the benefit of farmers.
