`State should bid for Asian Games'

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The President of the Karnataka Olympic Association, K. Govindaraj, has said that Bangalore, which has gained importance in recent years, must bid for hosting the next Asian Games. He deplored the poor allocation of funds for the various sports organisations in the State and the lack of preparedness on the part of the Government to host the next Junior National Games in the City.

Distributing prizes to winners in the Inter-Media tournaments conducted by the Press Club of Bangalore, he said the Government is allocating a few lakhs of rupees to the sports' bodies. The sports budget of Karnataka compared poorly with that of States such as Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The sports organisations are being starved of funds.

Mr. Govindaraj said that though the Junior Nationals are to be held here in November, the Government has not taken up the matter yet. With government encouragement and that of the Indian Olympic Association, the City could become the venue for the next Asian Games. So far those games have been conducted only in New Delhi.

He also wanted the media to support and encourage the various games and athletics and not merely concentrate on cricket and tennis, which have become the monopoly of the rich and the elite. The Director of Doordarshan Kendra, Mahesh Joshi, assured that Doordarshan would encourage sports in a greater way. The President of the Press Club, Arakere Jayaram, noted that because of the restrictions on construction activity within the Cubbon Park where the Club is situated, they could not provide even minimum facilities for sports.
